Quiksilver Indonesia and Bali’s surfing community came together at sunset on Saturday to remember the victims of the recent terrorist attacks.
Over 100 local and international surfers gathered quietly in the late afternoon sun on Jimbaran Beach in a show of defiance against the bombing attacks that occurred at the same site a week earlier.
As a united group, the surfers entered the water and paddled out behind the breaking waves where people from all nations formed a circle holding hands. Those who lost their lives were silently remembered with floral chains thrown into the ocean as the sun disappeared.
No one who participated in the paddle out was surprised by the level of support and the sheer numbers of people who participated.
“It is a privilege to be involved in such an event. For many years the Balinese people have taken us into their homes, befriended us and cared for us. Today was an opportunity for us to show our support for the local community and remember those who were lost to a senseless act of aggression” Quiksilver South-East Asia chief executive officer Greg Hinchliffe said.
Following the paddle out, Quiksilver Indonesia in association with the Indies Trader 4 held a charity auction on the 35m luxury cruiser to raise money for the Indonesian victims of the tragedy.
